Im still in the closet to my family because my mother has told me to my face that queerness is "contagious" and a "treatable problem." She also says it with pointed stares. She knows im queer but as long as im "quiet" about it, they can pretend im "normal." Gosh, this fucking episode really hit home for me in some ways. :(

Yeah. I’m not gay, but I do have Roman Catholic parents who, while they tolerate homosexuality and don’t condone violence or bullying, continually argue against accepting it. And sometimes my dad will say jerky things. Like when I found out one of my fave authors as a kid (Tanya Huff) was actually married to another awesome author (Fiona Patton), my dad said, “So-called married,” in a derisive voice. I wanted to shout, “WE’RE IN CANADA, DAD. IT’S LEGAL EVERYWHERE. YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE MARRIED IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.”
