No, your actual job in the situation being referenced was to take quick and effective steps to protect Kurt, a minor student under your care, from being assaulted. Which none of you - with the exception of Sue Sylvester - ever managed to do. Your job was to promote an educational environment in which homophobia and general bullying was not implicitly encouraged. Which you never managed to do. Your job, as teachers, was and is to help make your school a safe space where all of your students can learn without feeling like their lives are threatened. “Knowing” or somehow “predicting” that Karofsky was going to attempt suicide is not the goddamned point.
AND WILL, WHO IS THIS “WE” YOU ARE REFERRING TO, BECAUSE I DISTINCTLY REMEMBER YOU SPENDING A SEASON AND A HALF TURNING YOUR BACK WHEN KURT WAS GETTING THROWN INTO DUMPSTERS AND AGAINST LOCKERS, YOU REVISIONIST ASSHOLE. FUCK.
HE DID HURT KURT. For fuck’s sake, it’s like they don’t watch their own show and I think that’s what pisses me off more than anything else.
I literally cannot with how angry this scene made me. Because Glee pretty much swept the entire failure of the faculty to do their fucking job in order to bring Kurt back to McKinley via the Bully Whips, a.k.a, the ACTUAL WORST plot decision in an entire chain of horrible plot decisions.
And, to accompany this, the ONE example of an institutional setting that managed to effect an environment that protects kids from bullying, Dalton, has been systematically dismantled for no other reason than to protect Sebastian from reprisal so that he could have his Karofsky induced moment of clarity.
LOL FUCK YOU, GLEE. YOU ARE NOT HELPING THE WAY YOU THINK YOU ARE HELPING.
I just sat there gaping at my screen at “We were all hard on Dave” Dave that suffered no consequences for his actions against Kurt (and if he had, someone might have actually realized the problems the kid was having and been able to have gotten him help!!) but instead it was wiped away so Kurt could get shuttled off to Dalton and the school be ineffective and it took a teenage girl to attempt to do the job that school didn’t because she wanted to be PROM QUEEN TO GET INTO HER LADYFRANDS PANTS.
… but they were too hard on Dave.
And typing that fucking paragraph above djsf;alfkdj fuck this show you know?
AND THEY WEREN’T HARD ON DAVE. They weren’t. I mean, Will fucking inducted him into New Directions and told him how talented he was and actually made a concerted effort to reach out to him. There are two sides that educators need to deal with with bullying (protecting and supporting the victim, and educating the bully while trying to find out the source of his violence), and while I agree that they fucked up on the victim’s end (except for Sue), they didn’t actually fuck the dog with Karofsky. Will and Beiste both reached out to him in caring and effective ways and it sucks that it didn’t work but that’s the way life sometimes is.
At the same time though, consider the situation. If you were an educator and you found out a former student of yours, one you’d taught only last year, had tried to kill himself, don’t tell me that you wouldn’t have scrolled through your memories wondering how you could helped, how you could have stopped it.
The problem with Glee, is that while the teachers’ reactions are completely realistic and understandable, within the context of the bigger narrative and all that happened last year, the context makes it offensive even when it’s clear the writers don’t mean to be. I kind of think Glee has crippled itself - it has this festering hot mess that is season 2, that was an utter failure on a number of levels, and they can’t just pretend it never happened - but they also can’t build on it, either. They can try to put write realistic situations that are positive and realistic on their own but are offensive when in the larger context.
Like, Will’s disciplinary actions towards violence will never ever be able to be taken seriously on this show anymore because of season 2. The writers can write any number of episodes where Will or Figgins try to be the good person but it will always be undermined by that one awful season. People will always wonder “WHY ARE YOU SO CARING NOW BUT YOU DIDN’T CARE IN SEASON 2?” And it sucks for the actors involved and especially the new writers who are essentially trying to wallpaper over dogshit. They are building on a foundation of fucking sand.

I wish there were more teachers like Emma when I was in middle and highschool. More teachers who try to notice the signs...
