Maybe - but they might be able to do a suicide attempt. Seriously, Max/Dave has had two minutes each for the last 2 episodes he’s been in and showed so much growth. With Chris/Kurt, I completely see it. If it was another lesser set of actors, I wouldn’t.No one should be happy about this episode.
No, attempt or successful, the WRITERS cannot pull off WRITING a story line like this on what’s supposed to be a comedy show of all things.
Something as serious as this deserves more respect, more build up, more exploration than one episode. It’s a cheap ratings ploy by the writers, tacky and exploitative. They’re using Karofsky for a PSA. They don’t care about the character.
And we’ll have to agree to disagree re: Adler’s acting. I think he does well as a creepy asshole (NBK-Furt), not so much as a woobie. And they’ll be woobifying him, for sure. That’s not real character development. It’s a cop out.
If you seriously think that something as serious as a suicide storyline can actually be written and handled with care the way that it should be in 42 minutes with a character that has not even been mentioned in eight episodes and got a two-minute sort-of-lead-up the episode before then you have absolutely no idea what kind of care actually needs to go into the storyline. It takes a lot more than powerful acting to actually do that properly. Meryl Streep and Morgan Freeman couldn’t do it.
I’m a pirate and Dave stan, and even I have to agree. The reason I was pissed with the ending in “The First Time” was that it sounded like a bit of a sad ending for Dave - like, he’s learning to be himself but he’s still hiding out in bars. But even that would have been an nicer ending than a suicide attempt.
Pirates want to see Dave get better and come to terms with accepting himself and more than that, learn to be happy. We know that he only gets, like, five minutes per appearance into which to squish as much development and backstory as he possibly can. And what few minutes we have have shown progress. It’s shown Dave accepting and identifying himself as gay and admitting to romantic feelings for another man and a desire to be in a romantic relationship with a man.
And now he’s suddenly suicidal? Not only is it going to be hard to make that a believable story in two minutes, but how is Dave’s character going to be shown recovering from that? Is THAT how Dave’s character is going to end? Broken and in the hospital? I would have PREFERRED Scandals to that, by a million billion times. I would rather have had his story end on the implication that he’s learning to love himself and accept who he is, slowly, in a seedy gay bar than the fact that he’s going to have to recover from a SUICIDE attempt.
Because that’s a terrible way to end his story, especially for the fans WHO HAVE BEEN WATCHING TO SEE HOW HE GETS BETTER, NOT WORSE. Because the only thing worse than ending his story on a suicide attempt would be bringing him back, a bare few months later, to give us another two minutes and there’s no way he’s going to have recovered into a Happy Bunny by that point.
I mean, this sounds horrible, but I would have preferred a gay-bashing storyline than a suicide one. At least a gay-bashing (which would still be horribly written and exploitative, I’ll admit) would be an external conflict, not an internal mental one that indicates Dave is not getting better despite every other scene we’ve had that indicates the contrary, it could have been tied to Blaine, too, with character development for both.
BUT NO. Like, this suicide storyline is COMPLETELY out of the blue. What other storyline does it tie to? I thought Ryan Murphy said he wanted a HAPPY ending for Dave. HOW THE FUCK IS THIS A HAPPY ENDING? FUCK YOU, RYAN MURPHY.
